The idea behind these two sessions was to help new teachers get an idea of the children that make up their classrooms - that just because they are grade x teachers, does not mean that all of their students are at the same level of learning and they certainly don’t all learn in the same way! As in most of the sessions I facilitate, I generally do a little presenting and a lot of encouraging of participants to speak and share their own knowledge.

l’Intelligence Émotionnelle: Workshop for French teachers and administrators

This was my first opportunity to present in French. This particular session was interesting from the get-go, as a school principal questioned the validity of the concept ‘emotional intelligence’ since he believed the two to be mutually exclusive. By the end, he was advocating for a second session to present to the teachers in his school as he came to believe that they are actually mutually dependent! Again, I presented a little information and allowed the participants to share their own knowledge and beliefs on the topic.

Math Organizational Skills: Cross referenced procedural lists : Workshop for Math tutors

A resource coordinator at a high school asked me to work with her school’s tutors in developing their expertise at supporting organizational skills in math. This workshop is a work-in-progress as we continue to work on this concept. As with many ideas, it can be easier to talk about than to implement! The next step is to bring the teachers in to see if some of this can be taught to students in the classroom.

I am coming to realize that organizational skills are at the centre of many a student difficulty! Again, I think that this is something that needs to be taught in the classroom to all students and not just to the student with disabilities. All students would benefit and the added advantage is the student with special needs would be able to participate in the classroom more often than not.

Conversations for ethical decision-making in secondary schools: 2005 A report on exploratory sessions

During the first year of my MA I conducted an independent study on how to facilitate decision-making about difficult issues in the high-school where I worked. I created my own participatory-action research framework as I worked with 4 teachers from the school to develop this model.

Enhancing Learning: 2003 History 414 and layered curriculum, setting up all children to succeed

One year at Weston School 18 students in Sec. IV were recommended for resource support by the History teacher before the school year even began. As the resource teacher, I jokingly commented that I should teach the course. That’s what ended up happening and I needed to differentiate in order for my students to succeed. This website was a result of that year and those students. When high school teachers brush DI aside for lack of time in high-stakes courses like History 414 I like to let them know that all but 2 of my ‘at-risk’ students passed the course and learned organizational-skills that were transfered to other courses as well!
